Welcome to the RCC of Dane County

Welcome to the Rape Crisis Center.
Serving Dane County since 1973, the Rape Crisis Center (RCC) provides services to the survivors (and their family and friends) of all forms of sexual violence, including recent sexual assault, past sexual assault, incest (past or present), sexual harassment, and sexual exploitation.

These services are provided free of charge and include crisis intervention and support (24 hour Crisis Line and on-call Advocate/Counselors) short-term counseling, support groups, therapy groups, medical/legal advocacy and accompaniment, community education, and Chimera Self- Defense Designed for Women. RCC serves women, children, and men.

Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Bill signed into law!
Wisconsin has experienced a historic moment. On March 13, Governor Doyle signed into law 'Compassionate Care for Rape Victims,' which ensures that hospitals throughout the state will provide emergency contraception to rape victims upon request.

Emergency Contraception, or "EC" for short, is a stronger dose of birth control pills. If taken within a few days, it can help protect a rape victim from becoming pregnant from the assault. Offering information about and access to EC for women who have been raped is the standard of care recommended by the AMA and professional associations for Gynecologists and Emergency Room doctors, among others. However, research shows that two-thirds of hospitals in Wisconsin do not currently meet that standard.

We in Dane County are fortunate to have a dedicated SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners) program at Meriter Hospital offering high-quality, appropriate care for victims of sexual violence.

Our friends and family in other parts of the state, however - or ourselves, if traveling - could not count on being given all the information and options for treatment following the trauma of an assault. Now, thanks to several years of effort by a committed coalition, this standard will be applied state-wide.

While the Rape Crisis Center has a 24-7 job focusing on local issues and providing services within our community, we are proud to belong to the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault, which works on state-wide issues and legislation and helped to pass this momentous legislation.
